also in Singapore

»I hate to say this but the local blogosphere is in a sad state from the perspective of blogosphere as an avenue for serious discussion of socio-political issues.«

Aaron Ng, in: The sad state of blogosphere (Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Blog, August 6):

If most people reading blogs are more interested in Xiaxue versus Dawn Yang, then the establishment isn’t going to take comments from socio-political bloggers too seriously since they aren’t really much of a threat.

[I can't believe it!]

»And on that happy note, we end the blog.«

skimble, in: Outrage fatigue (skimble.blogspot, July 31):

I have ceased to care about McStupid’s Britney video and Obama’s acting presidency. Or the New Yorker cover. Or Cindy McCain’s 20 painkillers a day. Or the endless hand-wringing about the fucking narrative…

cri, in: Schleierfahndung (subkontent.at, 2.

perceptions of age

»I don’t think his age makes any difference.«

82-year-old Al Bramow, in: McCain battles against age bias (BBC News, Washington, July 29).

Probably politically incorrect - but some doubts come to my mind when watching this video: Barack Obama drains 3-point-jumper on first try in Kuwait. Impressive!

concerning poetry discussions*

»Poets need not take themselves so seriously.«

Mark Worden, in: A Lucidist Manifesto & Decalogue - and further:

And since poetry does not automatically, if ever, deliver Truth, whatever that is, poetry should not stand in need of rabbinical exegesis or cryptoanalysis in order to be understood. Poets should take as one of their chief goals: TO ENTERTAIN.

Of course, that’s only one point of view - but an important one, I believe (me being only a reader of poetry, I don’t/can’t write poetry).

*Note: I had one last evening.

fake Mickey Mouse statues in Beijing

»They have square holes in their ears.«

A Chinese spokesperson when asked about the resemblance - and:

The spokesperson suggested the statues are unique because they incorporate the themes of old Chinese coins (the square holes), the year of the rat, the Olympics and the financial district into the design.

Japan Probe: Fake Mickey Mouse statues at the Beijing Olympics (July 24)

Picture below (from Japan Probe): The rat with square holes…
