US lost jobs; jobless rate down to 9.7%

- Nonfarm payrolls fell by 20,000 last month. The unemployment rate unexpectedly declined to 9.7% from an unrevised 10% in December.

- The December figure was revised down: Nonfarm payrolls fell by 150,000 (from an originally reported 85,000 drop).
