Sparse blogging ongoing here…

… we are still learning round-the-clock. Especially languages because I think this is the best way to become a better blogger.

Yesterday’s evening, I resumed my German language course online by reading Elfriede Jelinek’s Im Verlassenen - a short text about the world, Austria and Josef Fritzl, also called the monster in the cellar [via Side Effects]. The text isn’t as easy to read as a text written, let’s say, by Karl May. Nevertheless I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Austrian literature.

Today, over lunchtime, I went to my hairdresser - called Frisör in Austria, but I am living in Switzerland - and had my hair cut the same as the last time. We were just talking about the upcoming European Soccer Championships in Switzerland and Austria (EURO 2008) when the local radio station reported a massacre in Vienna: a 39-year-old man killed five members of his family, some apparently with an axe. Now, I am pretty curious whether Elfriede Jelinek will write also about this terrible crime.

Today’s evening, I will brush up my English skills by commenting on some English written blogs. The grammar and the word-order in the English language are much more complicated than in German; on the other hand, punctuation seems to be easier, especially when listing:

the world, Austria and Josef Fritzl
or
the world, Austria, and Josef Fritzl

I have read that both variants are correct. But not so in German! The comma before and would be wrong, and therefore you can only write the world, Austria and Josef Fritzl.

Relax. Your English is better than that of most Americans.
