Our Weekly Postcard (LXVI)

Photo of a ruined room

To blog or not to blog - that’s our question of the moment.

No, we are not obsessed with checking our sitemeter - we don’t even have one here. And no, we would not be depressed if we had a sitemeter and would check it.

It’s more a general feeling at this point: We think that there’s more and more something fishy about blogosphere. Too much hubris, too much spam, too much propaganda, too much SEOs, sometimes even too much boredom.

We are at the crossroads now.

What are our alternatives? One is to end blogging; the other is to stop blogging. Well, at this very moment we prefer the second one. A sharp halt - time for re-thinking our concepts. Following some of our ideas:

(1) Upgrading Paperholic blog to WordPress 2.5 (based on PHP5) and going spiritually back to our roots: more images than words, more vintage feelings than up-to-dateness, more charme than aggressiveness, written only in English. Being asked to name a prototype, we would answer: Mr. Zeigermann’s The Cartoonist blog - but with the restraint that we are not cartoonists.

+

(2) An additional new main blog with more words than images, more up-to-dateness than vintage feelings, more aggressiveness than charme, written only in German. Being asked to name a prototype, we would answer: Mr. Klaus J. Stöhlker’s Weblog - but with the restraint that, politically seen, he is on an other tack than we are (i.e. he is on the wrong tack).

To end this long story: Stay tuned, pls. Come over here from time to time. And perhaps, you want to contact us via our Contact us because you have a blog based on a concept we described above (and we should link to it).

First of all, thanks for the plug. Then, why not combine (1) + (2)? Have a two-column blog, left column for pictures, captions & links, right column for long(ish) texts? And a third, narrow column for links, archives etc. Although I don’t know if this is physically possible with Wordpress or any other blogging software, since you’ll then need to update both columns independently from each other. However, Paperholic should definitely carry on.

    Thx for your suggestion.

Yes, that would be possible with WP. There are even “themes” with 4 or 5 columns (1 main + 3 sidebars and 4 sidebars respectively).

I would call that a “baroque” solution - personally, I am a fan of the less-is-more-principle. But why not? In any case, we will discuss your suggestion.

I think the question is if you can update (and date) those sidebars as easily as the main column. However, it could look quite nice, having two columns with an equal width and a narrow sidebar to the left or right. But then, what do I know of wordpress - nothing, basically.

„However, Paperholic should definitely carry on.” Definitely!

Like Coudal, but “having two columns with an equal width”, as you said. Or a sort of magazine theme like Brian Gardner’s

But, typically, the good magazine themes are not for free. Okay, we could afford one at the moment, but I think a paid theme would be contrary to the basic ideas of blogging. And a beautiful theme is only half way there… we also need “better” content then.

Oh, Mr. pzillig - sorry, a sort of “overlapping” in the thread here…

Thank you very much! That’s a real encouragement!

Very great for many photos would Aperio from Robert Ellis be.

Please keep on blogging! I like your postcards and other hints! Anyways, just don’t end up with a blog about blogging…

We will also have a sharper look at the FUTUROSITY Theme.

    THX, Claudio!

At the moment - and sticking in the muddle (”Aye Sir, Aye!”) - it just feels like it’s time for a change.
