TIMELESS STYLES

Russian watches

Tradition can be a very powerful force! Benefiting from the knowledge and craftsmanship developped during the Soviet era, the Russian watch manufacturers of today are masters of their trade and can enjoy a good reputation around the world. On the website of Sadcom (an online store based in Potomac Falls, Virginia, USA) you can find watches from Russian manufacturers like Vostok, Poljot, Raketa, Slava, Pobeda, Molnija, but also thousands of images of various Russian and Soviet memorabilia items like the photo below that was taken at the entrance to the 1st Russian Aero Exhibition in St.Petersburg in fall 1912, or the posters School of Patriotism and Participate in the Lottery from the year 1990.

Indeed, most peculiar, Russian President Vladimir Putin wears a US-Dollar 60 000 Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar watch, as PRAVDA.RU reports on Feb 17. The prize of the watch would be equal to the amount of the president’s annual wages. The newspaper characterizes US President George W. Bush as a very modest person: he wears a US-Dollar 50 Timex Indiglo watch. Last but not least, having a great passion for watches Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wears a US-Dollar 540 000 Constantin Vacheron watch.

OF PHALLIC WORSHIP (AND MORE)

Shunga

Ink on paper (c. 1830-1860): Woman with four men | Woman with three men | Woman with two men: JAPANESE SHUNGA and OTHER EROTICA, a calligraphy sui generis, and yes, often, not without humor.

Finally, it should be mentioned that while almost every major Japanese master created erotic prints and paintings, most of the erotica from China (and much of it from Japan) is considered anonymous. This has led to a much greater scholarship within the field of erotic art of Japan than perhaps in any other culture.

An online exhibition provided by the Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle.

See also the other items on the gallery’s Print Inventory List (from Anne Appleby to Terry Winters), and the impressive current exhibition: Katy Stone – Paintings on Mylar (until Feb 26).

ILLEGAL RAILWAY PICS FROM SERBIA

Serbia railway

Endre Barta writes:

Railway photography is not allowed in Serbia but I don’t know if it is because of the militaristic way of thinking or just because of the staggering circumstances. Photos are presented quite seldom about Serbian railways so I could not imagine what will I see there. I expected something better… The vehicles are not so bad but the infrastructure is in a very broken down state while it is terribly overdimensioned. The newly built, haunted stations like Novi Beograd, Beograd Centar or Zemun are very fearful places…

Endre Barta’s railway trip to Serbia with comments (January 2005): Kelebia – Beograd – Tosin Bunar – Beograd Centar – Zemun – Subotica – Szeged

Railway fans, please, remember: There are always (a lot of) new pics at The Railfaneurope.net/pix/new, i.e. last update = today!
